I just love contemporary art. Anyone who doesn't, obviously doesn't see the humor in it, or understand that it often doesn't take itself very seriously. That's why I run, not walk, every year to the FIAC (The International Fair for Contemporary Art) -- to laugh my way through the galleries' booths and discover some nutty artist's idea of life. It was such a glorious day in Paris Sunday that the line to enter the FIAC at the Grand Palais was around the block. I can understand why, aside from the fabulous weather, as there was a myriad of mirth inside. A sign suspended from the glass roof of the spectacular exhibition hall saying "Stop Talking" had us speechless...at least for a moment!...until we spotted the talking flower with eyes on every petal, opening and closing, the mouth talking about what -- well, I missed that. And yes, this battery-operated male doll (as you see above) does a strip tease just for you. In Disney-style packaging, for a mere 239€, you could go home with one of Wim Delvoye's "Action Dolls." Not bad looking, but a little on the small side for me, about 12 inches tall in all. A rear view mirror attached to the roof of a Paris building provided a bird's eye view of the city...and no, that's not New York City all glittery and looking stately -- those are refrigerators-turned-skyscrapers creating a cool part of town. Below is a parking lot of vintage cars to look down on, haphazardly parked, and only large enough to fit your big toe as a passenger. King Kong was fierce and wired to hang on the nearest tree -- I imagined that's why the artist chose to construct him entirely of wire hangers (get the pun?). The FIAC
is open through today through 6 p.m. at the Grand Palais and Carrée
du Louvre. Visit http://www.fiacparis.com
